Alla vigilia del suo diciottesimo compleanno, Manuel lascia il centro di accoglienza nel quale vive da quando sua madre è stata arrestata. Fuori deve cavarsela da solo, trovare un lavoro, impegnarsi a fare uscire il genitore di prigione e dimostrare alle autorità giudiziarie che saprà farsi carico della madre garantendole una situazione stabile. Accudirla ai domiciliari costituisce per lui il solo orizzonte possibile.

On the eve of his eighteenth birthday, Manuel leaves the reception centre where he has been living since his mother was arrested. On the outside, he has to fend for himself, find a job, try to get his parent out of prison and prove to the judicial authorities that he can take care of his mother and guarantee her a stable situation. Looking after her under house arrest is the only possible horizon for him.

Al suo esordio, Dario Albertini attraversa col protagonista le stazioni di un reinserimento alla vita nella periferia balneare laziale, che non offre migliori prospettive di quelle del luogo da cui proviene. Tragedia di un Ercole contemporaneo costretto a sostenere fatiche e a pagare la colpa del genitore, Manuel ribalta la logica della ‘custodia’: è il figlio, caduto prematuramente dal nido, a farsi garante e guardiano della madre, tracciando una riga definitiva sulla sua giovinezza.

In his debut film, Dario Albertini and his protagonist go through the stations of a reintegration into life in the seaside suburbs of Lazio, which offer no better prospects than those of the place he comes from. The tragedy of a contemporary Hercules forced to bear the hardships and pay the guilt of his parent, Manuel overturns the logic of “custody”: it is the son, who has fallen from the nest prematurely, who becomes the guarantor and guardian of his mother, drawing a definitive line on his youth.
