Maria Callas, giunta alla fine della propria carriera, viene avvicinata da un giovane impresario che le propone di rifare tre delle sue opere più famose in playback. La cantante in un primo momento accetta, ma gradualmente si rende conto che la tecnica non può sostituire l’arte.

At the end of her carrer, Maria Callas conctacts a young entrepreneur who proposes she lip synen three of her most iconic arias for a performance. The singer, who at first accepts, gradually comes to struggle with her decision as she scrutinizes the meaning of her art.

Il primo film da lui diretto nel 1958 Camping, una commedia sentimentale. Dimostrerà uno stile più personale in La bisbetica domata del 1967 e in Romeo e Giulietta del 1968, trascrizioni shakespeariane realizzate con gusto innovativo ed eleganza figurativa. Famose sono le sue trasposizioni letterarie successive, Fratello sole, sorella luna del 1972 e Amleto del 1990. La sua opera dominata da una vena romantica di accurata sensibilità sia per i particolari che per la definizione dei personaggi. Memorabile il Gesù di Nazareth del 1977, entrato nella storia del cinema per il ritratto umano del Cristo. Tra il 1996 e il 1999 ha diretto il film Jane Eyre e Un tè con Mussolini, quest’ultimo parzialmente autobiografico. Nel 2002 sempre per il grande schermo, realizza Callas Forever, liberamente ispirato alla vita di Maria Callas. Nel 2017 è nato Il Museo Fondazione Franco Zeffirelli a Firenze che ne ripercorre le tappe artistiche.

Franco Zeffirelli (Firenze, 1923). In 1949 he debuted as a stage director with the comedy Lulu. The first film he directed was the sentimental comedy Camping in 1958. He showed a more personal style in The Taming of the Shrew in 1967 and in Romeo and Juliet in 1968 with an innovative and elegant transcription of Shakespeare’s works. Later his transpositions of literary works became famous like Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna, in 1972 and Amleto in 1990. His work is characterized by a strong romantic vein and a fine sensitivity for details and definition of characters. His unforgettable Gesù di Nazareth in 1977 made history in the movie world for portraying Jesus Christ as a human being. Between 1996 and 1 999 he directed the films Jane Eyre and the semi autobiographical film Un tè con Mussolini. Once more for the television, in 2002, he made Callas Forever inspired by the life of Maria Callas. In 2017 the Museum Zeffirelli Foundation opened in Florence to accompany the visitors through the most memorable moments of Zeffirelli’s life and career.
