Cinema at school
The cinema appointments between N.I.C.E. (New Italian Cinema Events) and the students of middle and high schools and of foreign institutes in the Florentine territory have been taking place for more than twenty years.
Thanks to the educational project “Key to the City”, funded and promoted by the Municipality of Florence, the students have the opportunity to confront themselves directly with the insiders, learning the tools to read a film and to analyse its processes from the subject to the distribution in theatres, to relate to film critics and to films that deal with human rights, in particular those of women.
The lessons take place in classrooms and theatres in the presence of directors, actors, scriptwriters and soundtrack authors. The students are also involved in the “Students’ Jury”, which awards the prize to the best film during the N.I.C.E. “City of Florence” Award ceremony held every year at Cinema La Compagnia. From 2019 onwards, the project foresees the creation by the students of two short films whose development is supervised by two directors and which will be presented the following year during the N.I.C.E. City of Florence Award ceremony.
The project is realised with the support of the Department of Culture of the City of Florence, Regione Toscana, Agis Toscana, and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze.
Ciak, GenerAzione!
N.I.C.E. proposes for the three-year period an educational path centered on equal opportunities and gender issues through cinema. Specifically, the work will focus annually on a film genre: short films, animation and documentaries, which address the issues in question.
For the project, cinema is both a means of conveying the themes covered by the educational intervention, and itself a cultural product that young students will learn to analyze through interpretations provided by professionals in the film industry. The boys will also compete annually in the making of a short film, assisted by two Florentine directors. The short film will then receive visibility and recognition within the prestigious “City of Florence Award – Donatella Carmi Bartolozzi”, held every December at the Cinema la Compagnia. On the same occasion, a jury of students will also be asked to evaluate what for them is the best film of the N.I.C.E. of the year, giving their prize to the winning director.
Transversely to the whole project of Le chiavi della Città, N.I.C.E. will involve students in the creation of promotional content targetedon their generation, to increase the dissemination of film and work culture and of the films selected by N.I.C.E.
N.I.C.E. Video Library
In order to further spread the knowledge of the new Italian cinema, N.I.C.E. has also set up two Video Libraries containing more than 2500 of the titles presented by the festival over the years, and the posters of the festival’s 30 years of activity. From 2019 they are also enriched with titles of Russian cinema brought by N.I.C.E. to Florence.
The Video Libraries are free of charge and can be consulted by everyone at the Biblioteca delle Oblate in Florence and the Fondazione Sistema Toscana Media Library.
